Pamphlet. Condition: Poor. This pamphlet is in terrible condition because the pages are stuck together. Some pages are partially visible and that may be helpful to someone. Or, someone may know of a way to separate the pages successfully resulting in possessing something that could be of value personally or for resale. Very scarce item (only two showing in WorldCat). Please contact us if you have any questions or would like to see more images. Interesting text accompanies the photos. Reference is made to Mercer making the statement: "The Peavey was the invention of a blacksmith, John Peavey of Bolivar, New York, who about 1870, put a cant-hook on a jam pike, thus making a tool with which a log could be rolled toward him as well as pried away from him. . . . The Maine story of the Peavey cant-dog agrees with Mercer's account only in ascribing the invention of the Peavey to a blacksmith Peavey . . . , and he lived in Stillwater, Maine." ; B&W Illustrations; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; 6 pages.

This book delves into the history of paper preservation, exploring the factors that have contributed to the deterioration of valuable records and publications over time. The author examines the impact of air pollution, specifically sulfur dioxide, on paper, demonstrating its significant role in the embrittlement and discoloration of paper. The book emphasizes the importance of controlling the library environment to minimize the exposure of records to harmful gases and pollutants. The author also explores the quality of paper itself, discussing the decline in the use of high-quality materials and the introduction of less durable fibers such as ground wood pulp. The examination of paper specimens from old books and newspapers provides concrete evidence of the detrimental effects of low-grade fibers on the longevity of printed materials. By presenting a comprehensive analysis of the causes of paper deterioration and offering practical solutions for preservation, this book serves as an invaluable resource for librarians, archivists, and anyone concerned with the preservation of cultural heritage. It underscores the critical need for proper storage conditions, environmental control, and the selection of high-quality paper to ensure the enduring legacy of written records. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

A program for the year end art exhibition of a free evening drawing school located in North Adams, MA. The class was taught by A. W. Scribner, a local 'Artistic Designer and Draughtsman'. The inside front and back covers list the names of the students exhibiting their work, along with a number that correspond with the works of art that were being presented. Additionally on the back cover there is a list of the graduating class and the course's motto: Ars Soror Scientiae (Latin for 'Art Science Sister'). In order to pay for this program, Scribner filled the booklet with advertisements from various local businesses in or around North Adams. Scribner himself, designed and illustrated all of the highly decorative and elaborate advertisements within, which then serve as a form of self-advertisement. Furthermore, there is even an advertisement for the drawing school and Scribner's business as well. Additionally, there are also several humorous drawings done by Scribner that were done to fill space as needed. For example, there is a short comic strip that shows a cat on a fence, with the question "I wonder what makes the cat so sad?". The next box shows the other side of the fence which depicts a crab that has pinched the cat's tail. 8 pg. Illustrated tan wrappers. String binding. Measures 7 3/4" x 4 3/4" Minor missing surface litho on covers. Age toning.
