La première édition des "Variétés Bordeloises" de l'abbé Baurein (Bordeaux, 1713 - 1790) date de 1784-1786, publiée chez Labottière en six volumes in-12. L'objectif de l'abbé était de donner une description des paroisses et cantons du diocèse de Bordeaux. Sa démarche fut originale, puisqu'il fit envoyer à tous les curés des paroisses un questionnaire composé de 58 questions. Les premiers volumes offrent des notices historiques (toponymie, histoires, monuments, traditions, généalogies.), indépendantes les unes des autres, sur toute la rive gauche de la Gironde et de la Garonne, à l'exception partielle du Bazadais qui formait un diocèse distinct de celui de Bordeaux.
