L'abbé Berthaud, directeur d'une institution de jeunes gens pendant près de 40 ans, publia en 1744 cette méthode de lecture sans épellation qui connut une très grande vogue. Buisson, dict. pédagogique : « La partie de l'élève se compose essentiellement de 88 fiches carrées, d'où lui est venu le nom de quadrille. Ces fiches portent chacune une image représentant un objet connu de l'enfant et destiné à lui faire retenir mnémoniquement une des 88 syllabes dans lesquelles l'abbé Berthaud résume tout l'enseignement de la lecture française ; par exemple, pour apprendre le son u, l'image représente un bossu. On montre la gravure à l'élève, et en même temps le mot bossu, puis uniquement la lettre u. L'élève reconnaît cette lettre, d'abord à l'aide de l'image, et insensiblement par la forme même de la lettre, qui se grave ainsi dans sa mémoire (on reconnaît là en germe le système des mots normaux de Vogel). Lorsque l'élève sait une série de 20 fiches, il applique ses connaissances acquises, dans une suite de syllabes, de mots et de phrases que l'on trouve dans le livre du maître. Par ce moyen, l'enfant apprend rapidement les 88 fiches ; il sait lire au bout de quelques semaines d'exercice. ».
