He also had close contact with US abolitionists and helped form the Anti-Slavery League. While much of the text is concerned with prison and race issues, he also wrote on a wide variety of other social and economic topics, including trade unions, a deaf and dumb asylum in Hartford, preacher salaries, law-suits, Washington D.C., speeches in Congress, mineral springs, a steamboat on the Ohio, Liberia, Cincinnati, infant schools, Cherokee Chiefs, and much more.
