Abel Mathieu, sieur des Moystardières est le premier qui conseille d'écrire les livres de sciences, et particulièrement de médecine, en françai…s. Il avait suivi à Bourges, les cours du célèbre jurisconsulte Alciat, dont la réputation était si grande alors, parce qu'il se proposait d'allier à la science juridique, une culture littéraire très soignée. C'est en raison de cette influence que Abel Mathieu, tout en restant jurisconsulte très compétent, s'intéressa vivement au développement de la langue française. A la suite de cette publication, Mathieu engagea une polémique assez vive avec le grammairien Louis Meygret. Ce volume reprend le "Premier devis" de 1559 et le "Second devis", de 1560 mais ils sont ici refondus et retravaillés et constitue pour Trevor Peach un ouvrage "indépendant". Comme l'indique le privilège, cette édition a été partagée entre Jean de Bordeaux et Jeanne Wouernier, la veuve de Richard Breton.
