L'édition originale a paru à Londres en 1784. «Elias HABESCI, né en Grèce, élevé à Constantinople, employé d'abord dans les bureaux du sérail, et ensuite dans ceux du Grand Vizir, a eu pour s'instruire des moeurs, des usages, des loix, du gouvernement civil et militaire, de la politique intérieure et extérieure des Turcs, des facilités qui ont manqué à la plupart des écrivains qui ont traité de cette matière. » (Avertissement du traducteur). Après avoir servi le Grand Vizir comme secrétaire sous le règne de Mustapha III de 1757 à 1774, Elias Habesci entra ensuite au service de la Russie.
