On each page are lines of poetry and prose from noted writers and works such as Thomas Paine ("These are the times that try men's souls"), Robert Burns, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, As You Like It & Midsummer Night's Dream (Shakespeare), Izaak Walton, John Milton, Sir Walter Scott, John Bunyan, Thomas Moore, Paradise Lost, The Odyssey.and many more. The book is a humorous story about the misadventures of a family of city dwellers who decide to rent a country house for a peaceful summer retreat. The story follows the protagonist, Mr. G. Adolphus Feakins, and his friend Solomon Dodd, as they try to find an economical and tranquil escape in upstate New York. Their plan for an idyllic summer quickly unravels when they encounter the various realities and problems of country living, much to the amusement or chagrin of their wives. The book uses witty and comedic scenarios to provide a lighthearted look at vacationing and family life in the 19th century, featuring sharp social commentary on the differences between urban and rural life during the Gilded Age. Condition: Some very light soiling to the front cover; clean back cover and spine. Bright gilt lettering and illustration on the front cover and spine. Cloth tears at the cover corners, and at the top and bottom edges of the spine. Some mild mottling to the cloth on the covers and spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Occasional small, light stains/smudges to the text pages. There is a thin, light stain at the top of the pages throughout. Page 10 is crinkled a bit at the outer edge with a small tear. Light foxing to front & rear end papers. A front end paper has an old, personal library label affixed, a color illustration of a rabbit, a name/address/date (1872) written in pencil, and a vertical crease down the center of the page. The following front end paper has a color illustration of roosters, a name/date (1871) written in pencil, and a small tear at bottom edge. The lower-outer corner tip of page 28 has torn off. Overall in Good condition.
