The Ortelius Atlas, or the Theatrum orbis Terrarum, was written, expanded, and continuously republished in seven languages between 1570 and 1624. Alongside true-to-scale maps, the manuscript contains assembled information about the lands depicted and is illuminated with charming images. Abraham Ortelius, a Flemish geographer and cartographer, composed some of the most influential map series of the Middle Ages. His atlas represents the crowning of his most important work.

Both volumes are in unfaded full pale brown smooth morocco decorated in gilt. Spine is decorated in gilt and partly faded. The editions come with the original slipcase, which is in very good condition with minor edge ware and a little spotting to the panels. 53 photographic lithographs of maps with accompanying Latin text make up the body of the main volume. Pages are joined into the atlas with binder stubs to lay flat when opened. Front endpaper has a 5cm crack at the foot of the gutter and the rear endpaper is uncracked at the gutter. Robust packaging.
