Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition. Large 8vo. pp. [iv], 97; frontis., one folding plate and illusts. to text; inner hinges slightly cracked, minor spotting, previous owner's blindstamp to front pastedown, adhesion damage to front endpapers, else very good in the original pictorial cloth, which is somewhat soiled, image to upper board a little scratched. This slim volume offers the first full account in English of the Duke of the Abruzzi's achievements in the Arctic. In 1899, aboard the Polar Star, the crew of 20 sailed for Franz Josef Land, the base for their attempt on the North Pole. Umberto Cagni amd three other men attained a new farthest north - 86º 34' - and the Polar Star itself attained the farthest north for a ship. A full version of the Duke's expedition appeared as On the "Polar Star" in the Arctic Sea (1903), but was preceded by this uncommon 1901 version.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. 1900 FIRST PRINTING of First UK Edition. Rebound in green cloth to resemble the original binding with original front cover title patch cleanly mounted in original position on front cover and original spine patches similarly mounted. Overall nice condition. Tight binding with no loose pages (the text block has been sewn into page gatherings = the stitching shows at the start/end of each gathering --> see photo). Gift inscription on front pastedown. No other former owner writing or marks in book. Based on the inscription, this book was given to Smoke Blanchard prior to his 1964 expedition to Mt St Elias, possibly by Vin Hoeman, beloved climber & mountaineering historian who perished in an avalanche on the 1969 Dhaulagiri expedition along with 6 others, though the "Love Always" seems a bit melodramatic. Smoke Blanchard's St Elias expedition was a 4-man venture starting at sea level. They did not reach the summit. There is foxing on several pages, mainly those opposite photo plates or at the page gathering ends. NOT ex-library. No dampstaining. Pages are clean and flat (not wavy as often happens with this book). Complete with all plates, panoramas and maps. The book measures 27cm tall x 19cm, and has 241 pages, 34 b/w plates, 2 folding color maps, 4 folding half-tone panoramas, 117 halftone text illustrations, 6 appendices, bibliography. This is the classic account of the first ascent of Mt. St. Elias in Alaska. PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK BEING OFFERED. vittorio sella (illustrator).

hardcover. 1901 First Edition. 97pp, 3 plates, 1 folding plate, original pictorial boards, some light soiling to boards, VG. A very scarce title. Luigi Amedeo, Duke of the Abruzzi (1873-1933), left for the North Pole in 1899 on board the Polar Star. Unfortunately, he lost two fingers to frostbite on the journey, so was unable to participate in the sled ride to the Pole. Captain Cagni instead made the trip, reaching 86° 34' N, a new 'Farthest North' and, as the somewhat ungracious title of this book states, 'Farther North than Nansen'. Glacier Books are experienced and professional booksellers. We take pride in offering carefully described books and excellent customer service.
