Il fut fondé en 1801 à Charleston (États-Unis) sous l'impulsion des Frères John Mitchell et Frederic Dalcho, sur la base des Grandes Constitutions de 1786, attribuées[1] à Frédéric II de Prusse. C'est à l'origine un rite qui ne comportait que des grades situés au-delà du grade de maître.Ici, « juridiction » de hauts grades maçonniques, dirigée par un « Suprême Conseil », qui regroupe des ateliers du 4e au 33e degré.
