A pair of views drawn on the spot, " From nature" by Wilhelm Heine, with figures after daguerrotypes by Eliphalet Brown, prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan.". Heine and Brown, the artists, may be seen conferring in the middle ground of one view. The expedition visited the then independent kingdom of Lew Chew (Ryukyu) in 1854, where famously Perry signed a trade agreement on July 11th. In 1875 Japan posted a military garrison in Lew Chew, annexing the Islands in 1879. Perry's Narrative goes into considerable detail about these views: ?Picturesque crags studded the hillside?Over it towered a tall crag, rent through the centre and surmounted with a square rock, like a ruined tower [and] on a spot commanding a fine view of the bay, [we] found a handsome Cunq-qua, in an enclosure planted with trees. A dignitary of some kind welcomed us, and we were plied with small cups of excellent tea??
