First Edition
Printed by Anton Koberger in Nuremberg on 7 May 1478, this edition of Vitae Patrum is a folio-format incunable of notable ecclesiastical interest. Although the collection bears the name of Hieronymus, it compiles narratives and teachings from a broad array of early Christian monastic figures. The edition incorporates De laude et effectu virtutum, a text linked to Adalgerus, and a letter attributed to Pseudo-Macarius. Figures such as St. Anthony the Great and St. Pachomius are featured, offering a primary source for early Christian desert monasticism. Koberger's press, famed for the Nuremberg Chronicle, contributed to the diffusion of such texts across Europe. Leaf cxxvii contains the final column of the first book; cxxviii begins a fresh register. The final colophon confirms date and place of printing. Good. Binding in full leather, worn at extremities with reinforced hinges; text block complete and stable. Folio (16 x 11.5 in). Collation: [7], ccxxxviij, [1]; leaf cxxvii printed in one column.
