Shadowbox Frame & glazed. Condition: Very Good +. Original wax portrait. Admiral Adam Duncan. Description: Continental framed detailed wax silhouette portrait in shadowbox frame of British Admiral Adam Duncan (1731-1804) from the Revolutionary War period: Image shows the navel uniform of the day. (Height: 7", Width: 6"). The name "DUNCAN" has been painted just below the relief. Adam Duncan, 1st Viscount Duncan (1 July 1731-4 August 1804) was a Scottish admiral who defeated the Dutch fleet off Camperdown (north of Haarlem) on 11 October 1797. This victory was considered one of the most significant actions in naval history (Wiki). Extremely detailed and accurate rendering in wax of renowned Admiral Duncan as determined by comparison with paintings and related images from his period. Beeswax has darkened his image with age without altering the precision of the execution. Artist unknown. Period estimated as nearly contemporary or not long after the life of the distinguished admiral (died 1804). From the Estate of Mark Falk.

Add to basketA notable assemblage illuminating the making and later neglect of Admiral Adam Duncan's fame, once acclaimed as the equal of Howe, Jervis, and Nelson. Lauded by his sailors as a "heart of oak", Duncan secured his reputation with the decisive victory at Camperdown (11 October 1797), when, commanding a fleet fresh from mutiny, he broke the Dutch line off their own coast, captured 11 ships and 6,000 prisoners, and halted a planned Franco-Dutch invasion of Ireland. His triumph brought a barony, a viscountcy, civic honours across Britain, and a flourishing commemorative industry that briefly rivalled that surrounding Nelson. This collection gathers fine survivals of that moment. A Tassie vitreous-paste profile locket engraved "Admrl. Duncan 17311804" belongs to the memorial issue produced after his death. A rare white-metal medal of 1797, attributed to Thomas Wyon the elder, shows Duncan facing front and Britannia triumphant on the reverse. An exceptionally delicate brass fouled-anchor charm, engraved "Duncan's Victory Octr. 11. 1797", represents the type worn by seamen, here in a far more refined form. The largest piece is a brass wall-sconce with Duncan's profile framed by maritime trophies and the word "Victorious", likely made not long after 1804, before his renown was eclipsed by Trafalgar. Four contemporary newspapers accompany the objects, reporting first dispatches from Venerable, Dutch accounts of the battle, correspondence between Duncan and the captured de Winter, and later charitable efforts for the over 1,000 British casualties. Together they preserve the immediacy of a victory once celebrated throughout Britain. Comprising a Tassie profile of Duncan mounted in bright metal locket with suspension ring, engraved on the reverse, c.35 mm high; 1797 white metal medal of Admiral Duncan commemorating Camperdown, 39 mm diameter; commemorative brass fouled anchor pendant or hat ornament, 50 mm along the shank, 33 mm across the flukes; large ornate brass single candle sconce with profile of Duncan within a trophy of cannon, flags, halberds etc. 360 x 16 mm; and 4 issues of The Glocester Journal, 520 x 360 mm, for 23 October, 30 October, 6 November 1797, and 30 December 1799 all with articles relating to Camperdown and Duncan.
