The first of five volumes of the Benson catalogue raisonne published between 1917 and 1959. The original etching is titled "Pair of Ducks". A good copy with some soiling and edgewear to the cover boards. The rear cover has a stain in the lower right corner. The endsheets are lightly foxed and there are two ink initials with a date underneath on the flyleaf else the text is very good and clean. The original etching is in fine clean condition. Foreign postage extra on this large book. Signed by Illustrator(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This is number 219 of a limited number of 600 copies of which 550 were for sale. Includes the the signed original etching as frontis- piece. The book is bound in jute spine over blue paper covered boards with the title in black on the front cover and on a cream paper label on the spine. Covers have light soiling. Corners spine caps and edges are bumped with some fraying at the head of spine. There are a few spots of foxing in margins on the first two leaves, etching # 279 and 280 and on pp 98 and 99. Sprinkling of foxing on the edges. The tissue guard has two light tanned areas. The original etching is in pristine condition, pencil signed by Benson. Otherwise, the pages are clean, smooth and unmarked. Etchings in this volume were done in 1923-1928 and number 224-285. All illustrations are in black and white. Too large to ship outside of the United States. Please see alll images. The artist was an American ornithologist, Impressionist painter and etcher. Signed by Illustrator(s).

Vol. Three 1923, no. 455 of an edition of 525 (of which 475 for sale), with very good original dust jacket, slightly chipped to the head of the spine. Vol. Four 1929, no. 133 of an edition of 600 (of which 550 for sale), no dust jacket, spine a little rubbed and worn, hessian covering slightly chipped at the head/tail. Vol. Five 1959, no. 243 of an edition of 400 (of which 350 for sale), with very good to fine original dust jacket. All dust jackets now protected in clear removable archival sleeves. Houghton-Mifflin 1917-1959. Five Volumes, complete. Volumes One and Two are editions of 275 numbered copies, Volume Three is an edition of 525 numered copies, Volume Four is an edition of 600 numbered copies and Volume Five is an edition of 400 numbered copies. All 4to, cloth-backed boards, volumes Two through Five with DJs. Each volume with an original etched frontispiece, each of which is signed except for that in volume Five, which was published after Benson's death. The original etchings are: Vol 1: Pair of Ducks, 1916, Paff 102; Vol 2: Two Geese, 1919, Paff 158; Vol 3: On Set Wings, 1923, Paff 223; Vol 4: Flying Pintail, 1927, Paff 275; Vol 5: Perching Grouse, 1941, Paff 347. Though there were some proofs,these prints were not editioned separately from the catalogue, and were each printed in whatever edition size the catalogue edition was. Volume One with a few small abrasions to the front endpapers where they were separated after sticking; Volumes Two through Five all Fine, but the DJs to Volumes Two and Four have 1 1/2 to 2 inch chips at the tops of the spines, and a few smaller chips. The numbers on the volumes vary. Complete sets with the original etchings present are now scarce.
