Couverture souple. Condition: Bon. Edition originale. In-8° broché, 8 pages. Né à Genève, Adolphe d'Espine suit un cursus médical à Paris où il défend une thèse sur la fièvre puerpérale (1872). De retour à Genève, il est nommé professeur de pathologie interne à la Faculté en 1876, médecin adjoint à l'Hôpital cantonal en 1882 et se spécialise dans les maladies des enfants. Il occupera d'ailleurs la première chaire de pédiatrie à partir de 1908. D'Espine rédigera, avec son ami Constant Picot, un manuel de pédiatrie qui devient un classique et ouvrira le premier laboratoire de bactériologie - un laboratoire privé - du canton. Au cours de sa carrière, il s'engagera activement dans nombre d'oeuvres philanthropiques. D'abord, en tant que médecin bénévole du Dispensaire genevois (1875-1879), ensuite, en mettant sur pied un dispensaire pour les enfants pauvres et, finalement, en acceptant d'assurer la vice-présidence du CICR (1914-1922).

Edition originale rare de cette thèse importante, qui fit l'objet d'une édition commerciale, chez Baillière, l'année suivante. Adolphe d'Espine (1846-1930), ancien interne des hôpitaux de Paris, devint professeur de pathologie interne à l'Université de Genève, puis titulaire de la première chaire de pédiatrie. Il fut membre correspondant de l'Académie de médecine de Paris. Cette thèse est très bien documentée et basée sur des données personnelles (expérimentations animales et observations anatomo-cliniques).
