Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Angus McBean; Adrian Woodhouse text; Snowdon foreword; Quartet Books, London, 1982. First edition. Angus Rowland McBean (1904 1990) was a Welsh photographer, set designer and cult figure associated with surrealism. McBean became one of the most significant portrait photographers of the 20th century, and was known as a photographer of celebrities. From the blurb This is the first retrospective of a remarkable photographer. Cecil Beaton called him the best photographer in the country; others dubbed him the camera's greatest magician; Lord Snowdon simply calls him a genius. Angus McBean revolutionized portraiture in the Thirties, left his mark on British theatre and created some of the strangest and funniest photographs with his irreverent surrealism which has kept the experts guessing. Angus McBean has always said his subjects wanted only to be beautiful. He made Vivien Leigh into the most beautiful woman in the world; he discovered Audrey Hepburn and gave Marlene Dietrich, Elizabeth Taylor and many other stars of the stage, screen and society his own special treatment. Even the Beatles and other popstars were given his attention. Angus McBean has collaborated with writer Adrian Woodhouse to present through 120 carefully selected photographs the pinnacles of his extraordinary career. This large format book, with pages measuring 303mm X 225mm is in near-fine condition in a near-fine dust jacket that is now in a protective mylar wrap. The only minor fault with the book and the dust jacket is a small damp stain at the top of the back of the book. Something that will never be noticed. There is a small personal gift inscription on one of the blank fore-pages. This large volume may require additional postage.
