In 57 BC, Caesar led his legions into the territory of the Atuatuci, a powerful and warlike people. The Atuatuci had concentrated their forces and their families in a single stronghold, determined to resist the Roman invasion. Caesar describes the oppidum as being naturally defensible, with steep cliffs on all sides except for a narrow, gently sloping isthmus. He ordered a siege, constructing a circumvallation around the oppidum to prevent the Atuatuci from escaping or receiving aid. The Atuatuci attempted a breakout but were defeated, and the Romans eventually captured the oppidum. The author re-examines the site of the oppidum and concludes it was located on the Mont Falise, a hill with steep cliffs overlooking the Meuse River. The book provides a detailed analysis of Caesar's account of the siege and the historical context of the conflict between the Romans and the Atuatuci. It also discusses the archaeological evidence for the siege and the significance of Caesar's victory in the broader context of the Gallic Wars. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
