First Edition. Author, Adrien Loir, was assistant to the world reknowned French scientist, Louis Pasteur. Loir travelled to Australia in 1888 on a ship called the 'Cuzco'. "The Pasteur Institute undertook significant work in Australia during the late 1800s. Pasteur and his colleagues attempted to curb the growing rabbit population (unsuccessfully). However, they were successful in developing several other vaccines, including one for the dreaded disease Anthrax. In his thesis titled 'La Microbiologie en Australie', Loir points out that there was strong opposition to the destruction of rabbits from the graziers, who had identified damage caused by rabbits as a justification for claims to reduce the Government rent on the land. Loir also explains that the political climate in Australia was such that the reluctance to see the Pasteur Mission succeed was virtually unanimous. Finally, the make-up of the Rabbit Commission itself was, in Loir's opinion, enough to explain its 'ill will' against the French scientists: 'an inter-colonial Commission was nominated, with great care in choosing among the various colonies those who were the most overtly opposed to Mr Pasteur's project'. Loir's visit to Australia would lead to fruitful collaboration in another area: the fight against cattle diseases. His thesis, 'La Microbiologie en Australie', was the first account of diseases of animals in Australia to appear in Europe, and was published towards the end of 1892." -Guillaume Mallet and Denise Sutherland. Octavo, paper wrappers, 96 pages, small chip to half title, mild streak on title page, otherwise fine.

Condition: Very Good. An uncommon title on Charles-Alexander Lesueur's travels in America from 1816 to 1839, illustrated with forty-two plates reproducing his sketches from the period, some of which was spent in New Harmony, Indiana. In addition, this copy contains three photographs taken of Lesueur's sketches, two of Lake Champlain and one showing The Hermitage in Nashville, from the originals held in Le Havre. Small 4to, red library buckram over original wraps, 108 pp. + 42 plates. With an additional three original photographs of Lesueur's work tipped in, along with a letter, presumably written by a staff member at the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle in Le Havre which hold the works. Ex-LOC, with duplicate and deaccession marks to plate on front pastedown, still very good overall.

Large octavo, 42 plates; in marbled parchment boards, preserving original printed wrappers. A detailed and surprisingly rare monograph on the Baudin voyage artist and naturalist Lesueur and the later period of his life spent in America, which includes a brief summary of his work on the Baudin expedition. He is renowned for his exceptional illustrations in the official publication of the voyage: "Lesueur's scientific work runs parallel to artistic work of great importance. He was at one and the same time draughtsman and painter, naturalist and landscape artist. His talent was recognised in France in his own lifetime, by the award. of the silver medal of the Société des Beaux-Arts." (Baudin in Australian Waters, p. 26). This publication is of particular interest for Lesueur's later career. In 1815, he travelled to the United States with the American geologist William Maclure, and in 1825 joined the New Harmony commune in Indiana soon after it was founded. It was during this period that he cemented his reputation as a naturalist, especially for his work in conjunction with the American Thomas Say. . Some leaves loose in the binding, but a good copy in a strong binding.
