About this Item: Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt Ltd, New Delhi, 2011. Hardcover. Condition: New. 2 Reprint. 96pp. Bharatas Natyasastra, the earliest treatise on dramatics, is, even today, the origin of our dramatic tradition. Besides being the most important study of dramatics, it is also the most comprehensive. The all-inclusive quality, however, creates problems for the reader who has to go through a great deal of unnecessary information. In his Introduction to Bharatas Natyasastra, the author has culled all information essential and relevant to drama, eliminating the superfluous. Eschewing attempt to provide any kind of a scholarly or original interpretation of Bharatas views, the author has focused on giving the reader a connected account of the study of dramatics using modern terminology. The purpose is to introduce those interested in drama to Bharatas wisdom and to throw light on the state of dramatics in ancient India. Written in a simple and lucid style, the author takes the reader through topics like theatre houses, the stage and stage-craft, play-construction and the rasa theory. All lovers of drama are sure to find this book both useful and absorbing. Seller Inventory # 395309

About this Item: Penguin, New Delhi, India, 2008. Paperback. Condition: New. First Indian Edition. Yesteryear's giant of Kannada literature, Adya Rangacharya—or Shriranga, as he came to be known—had many such epiphanic moments. That was how the child of an orthodox Brahmin jagirdar family went from watching, at first wide-eyed, village aatas put up by farm labourers to critically observing full-fledged natakas in the cities, taking in the theatre scene in London to finally writing—and often performing in—more than a hundred skilfully developed plays. There was no genre of writing that Shriranga did not touch. Creative writer and critic, he also penned a vast body of scholarly treatises on subjects that ranged from drama to philosophy and philology. His English translation of the Natyashashtra remains the definitive source of reference for most students of theatre. But as his memoirs reveal, his first and most abiding love was drama. His fifty years of association with the theatre were full of achievements, one of which was to bring women on to the amateur stage. Generations of actors have Shriranga to thank for investing their profession with a dignity it had lacked. But Shriranga's memoirs rarely touch upon such achievements. They record, without pomp or sentiment, the genesis and development of a brilliant Kannada dramatist. His daughter Shashi Deshpande's translation and her introduction to her father's life in theatre will bring him under the spotlight for a whole new audience. Printed Pages: 200. Size: 13 Cms x 19 Cms. Seller Inventory # 023046
