A fantastic handbook geared towards working people who are struggling to incorporate affirmative action principles into their workplaces.… The AAC was composed of several DC-based groups, including La Raza Legal Alliance, National Conference of Black Lawyers, National Lawyers Guild, the Center for Law and Social Policy and the Affirmative Action Coordinating Center. There are several illustrations depicting some of the hot-button issues around affirmative action, and placing it in a historical context. For example, one depicts a white colonial gentleman in a boat being pulled onto shore by two slaves, while a group of women begrudgingly prepare a meal nearby.The colonial chap says, "At last, America!! The land of freedom and equality!" Another shows a group of white and black workers struggling over a tug-of-war while the boss whistles without a care in the world. The next panel shows the workers, together, pulling the boss towards them, presumably to bend him towards their collective will. The content is a mix of legal resources, helpful guidelines, and discussions about the topic, all oriented towards practical, real-world application of affirmative action. OCLC records a healthy number of library holdings, but this volume is scarce in commerce.

An original NASA program detailing a summary of proposed programs and objectives in supp…ort of equal opportunity. The general policy contends that "Lewis management gives full support to a continuing program designed to promote equal employment opportunity without regard to race, creed, color, national origin or sex. In achieving the objectives of the program, positive steps will be taken to assure equal opportunity for all". The appendixes within are organized by categories "Specific Activities and Purposes", "Responsible Officials", "Target Date". One program proposed implements frequent contact with equal opportunity organizations including United Negro College Fund, Urban League of Cleveland, and Youth Opportunity Center. Another program implements a "more systematic follow-up" in providing counseling and advice to minority employees who are found to be under utilized". In college recruiting, they strove to seek and recruit minority graduates, with several schools including Knoxville College, and Tennessee A & I, Fisk University developing firm relations with them. Penciled ownership on front cover. Bright pages, in very good condition.

I…n the foreword by Logan Wilson, he notes that the book was created in parallel to the "American Council on Education's 1969 Annual Meeting", which was held to "get a better understanding of problems relating to the racial crisis on the campus and to further the kinds of changes needed to effect improvements". Featured are 44 essays tackling issues including the "Black Challenge to Higher Education", "Allocating Limited Resources", "Faculty Response to Racial Tensions", and "Racial Minorities and Curriculum Change". In one essay by Paul Wisdom and Kenneth Shaw, they assert that Black students "want full access to educational institutions, but they want the institutions to provide an education relevant to them and their needs". The archive offers a radical and multiracial perspective on one of the most contentious affirmative action cases in U.S. history. The Bakke decision was a landmark U.S. Supreme Court case addressing affirmative action in higher education. Allan Bakke, a white applicant, sued the University of California, Davis medical school after being denied admission despite having higher test scores than some minority applicants accepted through a special admissions program. The Court issued a split decision: it ruled that racial quotas, like the 16 out of 100 seats reserved for minority applicants at UC Davis, were unconstitutional under the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. However, the Court also held that race could be considered as one factor among others in admissions to promote diversity, thereby upholding the constitutionality of affirmative action in principle. This extensive and cohesive archive captures a grassroots left wing critique of the Bakke ruling, a 1978 U.S. Supreme Court decision that struck down racial quotas in university admissions and became a foundational case for opponents of affirmative action. Several pamphlets, including "Fight Racism-Overturn the Bakke Decision!" and "Don't Wait for 'Justice'-Prepare for the Bakke Decision Now," characterize Bakke as a racist assault on the gains of the Civil Rights Movement. One flier warns that "if the Bakke decision is not overturned by the Court, affirmative action programs for minorities and women will be threatened with elimination." The literature situates the case within a broader attack on working-class and minority rights, emphasizing how programs addressing centuries of systemic exclusion were suddenly being recast as discriminatory. A recurrent slogan appears throughout: "Racism is illegal, not Affirmative Action!" Materials reference national and local organizing efforts. A newsletter titled NCOBD Bulletin (Vol. I, No. 3) covers the October 8, 1977 National Day of Protest: "Over 10,000 people rallied to protests in numerous cities across the country" including Seattle, Oakland, and Washington D.C., where 2,000 people marched from the White House to the Supreme Court. The visual record is equally rich. Several items feature black-and-white images of multiracial protestors, many holding signs that read: "Overturn the Bakke Decision," "Fight Racism," and "Jobs and Education Now!" One dramatic image shows a raised fist holding newspapers emblazoned with "Negro Press" beneath a blazing torch labeled "Freedom Road," from the California Negro Leadership Conference booklet (Asilomar, 1970). Another photograph shows a crowd gathered outside Newark City Hall to protest police brutality, highlighting intersectional issues of race, employment, and justice. One pamphlet from the Revolutionary Communist Youth Brigade, printed in bold orange wrappers and titled Minorities & Whites, Unite to Smash the Bakke Decision!, argues that the capitalist system itself is responsible for inequality, urging youth to fight back: "Why should individual whites have to suffer for it with 'reverse discrimination'?" the text asks, answering, "Individual whites aren't suffering from 'reverse discrimination,' they suffer from the oppression the capitalist system deals the vast majority of all people." The archive also includes two pamphlets on the Weber case (1979), seen by organizers as an extension of Bakke. Both carry the subtitle "Unite against racism and the oppression of women," and stress solidarity across race, gender, and labor. They detail Brian Weber's challenge to an affirmative action program at a Kaiser Aluminum plant, noting that although 40% of the local population was Black, only 2% of skilled craft workers were. Condition uniformly very good, with some chipping and minor edge wear. An unusually comprehensive archive documenting leftist mobilization around one of the most pivotal rulings on race and education in U.S. history.

Placing the Supreme Court case within a broader struggle over school desegregation, minority access to higher education, and the public language of "reverse discrimination." The archive tracks affirmative action as a public controversy argued simultaneously in Supreme Court litigation, street protest, municipal personnel paperwork, press photography, and local organizing. Archive of 10 items including 6 original silver gelatin press photographs, 3 original Affirmative Action pamphlets, and one City of Pomona employment form. The pamphlets preserve the movement language of the Bakke fight in sharply different registers: Robert L. Allen's The Bakke Case and Affirmative Action states that "the past several years have been marked by growing racist reaction in the United States, especially in the field of education," then develops sections titled "Institutional Racism and 'Reverse Racism'" and "Affirmative Action and Racial Inequality," while Minorities & Whites, Unite to Smash the Bakke Decision! carries on the verso the call to "fight all attacks on oppressed nationalities! fight imperialism and the source of oppression! revolutionary communist youth brigade." The photographic and press-caption material extends the archive beyond the Supreme Court case itself: one print identifies Allan Bakke at UC Davis on 28 June 1978; another preserves Milwaukee desegregation protest signs reading "EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL!!" and "WHITE CHILDREN HAVE RIGHTS TOO!!!"; another carries a 25 July 1967 press clipping on federal troops entering Detroit; another identifies "Brian Baker, a native American Indian," in a printed caption on affirmative action and Stanford; and another records West Central Organization activity beside a wall lettered "W.C.O. WEST CENTRAL ORGANIZATION." The City of Pomona material includes an Application for Employment, an instruction sheet from the Personnel Department at 505 S. Garey Avenue, and an Affirmative Action Questionnaire asking applicants to identify sex, ethnicity, disability status, special accommodation needs, and how they learned of the job, with the form stating that the city is "committed to taking affirmative steps to ensure that minorities and women are adequately represented in the City's work force." Bakke's challenge to the UC Davis medical school admissions program became a national vehicle for the language of "reverse discrimination," and these materials preserve the counterargument in the vocabulary of anti-racist organizing, from Allen's discussion of institutional racism to pamphlet slogans demanding jobs and education for minorities.
