SELTENE ERSTE DEUTSCHE AUSGABE. - "John Campbell (1766-1840) Die Londoner Missionsgesellschaft schickte ihn im Juni 1812 zum Kap, um die dortigen Missionsstationen zu inspizieren. Er brach im Februar 1813 von Kapstadt auf und machte Halt in Bethelsdorp und Grahamstown, dem damaligen Militärhauptquartier. Auf dem Weg nach Norden besuchte er Graaff-Reinet und Klaarwater (später Griquatown) und reiste dann weiter nach Norden nach Litakun, dem Kraal des Batlhaping kgosi (Häuptlings) Mothibi. Seine Rückreise führte über Klaarwater, Pella und die Kamiesberge, und er kam Ende Oktober in Kapstadt an. Er schrieb einen Bericht über diese Reise mit dem Titel 'Travels in South Africa, undertaken at the request of the Missionary Society', der nach seiner Rückkehr nach London im Jahr 1815 veröffentlicht wurde" (Wiki., engl.).

Gay 3125; Cox I, 386; cf. Mendelssohn II, 414. - Second French edition. The original edition was published in Swedish in 1783. In 1772 Sparrmann stayed in the Cape Colony and was Cook's companion on the "Resolution" in 1772-75. This work mainly contains his travels from the Cape to the interior of Africa, which he made in 1775-76. "Most trustworthy account of the Cape Colony and the various races of the people then residing in it" (Mendelssohn). The plates are showing views, flora, fauna etc. Stamp on the title (verso).- Good, wide-margined and spotless copy.
