Add to basketEtching and Engraving. Condition: Very Good. Original French etching with burin engraving, plate dated 1721. Plate (image) approx. 20 × 27.5 cm (7 × 10 in): Support sheet approx. 31 × 41 cm (12 ¼ × 16 in) - the original print is trimmed to (or just inside) the platemark and laid overall to this larger laid paper backing Inscript…ions "N. Vleughels pinx." lower left; "E. Jeaurat sculp. 1721 - Paris chez Jeaurat" lower right; long French caption from Seneca beneath image. Provenance Private New England collection. Guaranteed 18th-century impression, not a modern reproduction. Condition Early, inky impression with crisp burin lines and delicate etching textures. The print was neatly trimmed by an 18th-century owner and pasted to a sturdier laid sheet (full margins of that support present). Backing shows even age-tone, scattered foxing, a few soft creases, and a small ink docket "262" at upper right. Image itself is clean and unmarred; no tears or repairs. References Portalis & Beraldi II/494; Inventaire du Fonds Français (Jeaurat); single recorded state. Subject Jason's infidelity drives Medea to vengeance: Creusa lies poisoned in the foreground, Medea's children slain beside her, while the sorceress escapes in a serpent-drawn chariot bursting through the clouds above-a dramatic Baroque tableau after Vleughels.

Bernardo Gomes de Brito (Lisbon, May 20, 1688 - after 1759) was a Portuguese scholar). He is known for having assembled in volumes the shipwreck relationships he called tragic maritime history. Little is known about his life, status or profession. Diogo Barbosa Machado only gives us his date of birth, from which it can be deduced that Bernardo still lived in 1759.

Add to basketFirst edition hard back binding in contemporary full brown leather covers, four raised bands with gilt tools between, spine title label missing -imprint in underlying leather showing. 8vo. 8'' x 6''. The accounts (some of which had been previously published as pamphlets) were collected by historian Bernardo Gomes de Brito and pu…blished in two volumes in 1735 and 1736. It is said that Brito had enough material to publish five volumes, but ended up only publishing two. In the course of the 18th century, several collections of other shipwreck accounts were published, alleging themselves to be the 'third volume' of Brito's work. Some of these latter accounts were appended to Brito's original in a multi-volume 1904-1909 edition of the História prepared by Gabriel Pereira. The original title of Brito's collection was História trágico-marítima, em que se escrevem chronologicamente os naufragios que tiveram as naus de Portugal, depois que se poz em exercício a Navegação da Índia, published in Lisbon by the Off. da Congregação do Oratório, volume I in 1735 (4° de XVI-479 pages.) and volume II in 1736 (4° de XVI-538 pages.). Brito's original 1735-36 work contains twelve accounts, in chronological order, from 1552 to 1602. [Volume 2 of 2 only] Comprising:- 1: The travails of the nau Santo Antonio, captained by Jorge de Albuquerque Coelho, attacked and seized by French corsairs when returning from Pernambuco, Brazil, in 1565 (written by Bento Teixeira Pinto, originally published 1601); 2: The wreck of the nau Santiago, captained by Fernão de Mendonça, off the Bassas da India (Mozambique Channel) in 1585 (written by Manoel Godinho Cardozo, originally published 1602); 3: The wreck of the nau São Thomé, captained by D. (written by João Baptista Lavanha); 5: The travails of the nau São Francisco, captained by Vasco da Fonseca, returning from Brazil, drifted to Puerto Rico in 1596 (written by Fr. Gaspar Afonso, originally published 1597); 6: The battles of the galleon Santiago against the Dutch at Saint Helena in 1602, and the nau Chagas against the English at the Azores in 1594 (written by Melchior Estacio de Amaral, originally published 1602).
