In the foreground a nude woman seen from behind, reclining on the ground, the head facing left; a child standing beside her, in the top left corner rocks indicating the entrance to a cave. In the background St. John on all fours in a landscape with castle. 5,4 x 7,9 cm.*Pauli No. 70a…: "Sehr gute Kopie". Good 16th century copy in reverse of Pauli No. 70.I, by an anonymous engraver. The depiction of the Penance of St. John Chrysostom is based on a late medieval legend according to which the hermit saint had seduced a girl. Following the birth of a child, he killed both mother and offspring. The saint was subsequently filled with such remorse that he could not look up at the sky and hence crawled on all fours until the newborn son of a queen pardoned him. Mother and child were then restored to life. - Four corners mounted on cardboard; slightly foxed; ample margins. [(5974)].

He is known as one of the so-called "Kleinmeister/Little Masters" from the small scale of his engravings.
