Background: John Le Keux was an engraver who was involved in several topographical books including the companion work Memorials of Oxford, whilst the artist Frederick Mackenzie was a watercolour painter and architectural draughtsman who made drawings for Ackermann's University of Oxford and Public Schools, and twenty-four of the Oxford Almnanacks between 1821-1853.

Leather Bound. Condition: Good. Quarto. 956 pages, indexed (the last 8 pages are the Index). Hardcover rebound or re-covered in modern full black leather. Light to moderate wear to the contemporary leather. (It appears as though black leather was wrapped around the earlier binding). New endpapers. The text block is sound, and the text is foxed. The book is illustrated with 30 full page plates, including a frontis and an engraved title page. A number of the full page plates actually have 4 images per page. Of the plates, 28 of the 30 are hand-colored (including the frontis and engraved title page). Two plates are not colored. The text also contains 12 smaller text illustrations in black and white. THE PLATES ARE DIFFERENT THAN THOSE THAT APPEAR IN THE PICART WORK. This work appears to collate complete. A scarce work. Currently we find no other copies online. We have found no published auction records for this work, and the earliest edition we find on Worldcat is 1828, listing the authors as Robert L. Huish, Bernard Picart, and Colin Mackenzie. The 1828 edition (with the same pagination) is listed as an abridgment of the Picart work.
