Each play features its individual copperplate frontispiece engraving capturing 17th-century theatrical costumes, decorative typographic headpieces (bandeaux), and historical stage directions reflecting Enlightenment-era staging. Binding & Physical Condition: The exact 1768 Chez la Veuve David printing reveals that it was originally issued in standard calfskin leather (plein veau brun or basane) as these are. With smooth spines. Spines retain their vibrant red morocco leather title pieces with gilt borders and lettering ("MOLIERE / OEUVRES / [VOL NUMBER]"). The publication year "1768" is neatly stamped at the tail of each spine. Text Blocks & Pages: Sound and tightly bound. Pages exhibit charming, naturally deckled edges left uncut or untrimmed by the binder—highly desirable for antiquarian collectors. Paper displays uniform, age-appropriate toning and light oxidation (patina), entirely free of major stains. The second edition of the illustrated collected works of France's greatest playwright by Thierry, Barbin, and Trabouillet. Molière? S sharp and bravura sense of humor, which encompasses the whole scope of human life, earned him the favor of Louis XIV? And the approbation of the Catholic church. This edition reproduces Thierry's 1682 illustrated edition, which was the first to print the text of his Don Juan [engraving included] A play attacking hypocrites which was quickly suspended, requiring him to censor the final lines even in print.
