Condition: very good. New Delhi : SAGE Publications Pvt. Ltd, 1997. Hardcover. Dustjacket. 254 pp. Library stamps. English text. Condition : very good. - Pollution Control in the South and North provides a comparative assessment of the strengths and constraints of pollution control instruments in a developed and a developing cou…ntry. After providing an overview of such instruments in India and the Netherlands, the authors present three case studies that provide detailed insights into how these instruments work in actual practice. The industries covered are textiles, cement, and fertilizers. The authors conclude from the data that the choice of the "optimal" instrument is largely influenced by economic, social, and environmental circumstances that difference between countries and from industry to industry. Their comparison of existing policies reveals the similarities and differences between the two countries. In conclusion, the book offers a number of suggestions for improvements in policy instruments aimed at preventing and abating pollution in both countries. In particular, the authors emphasize the possible role of economic instruments that they compare to a choice of instruments already in practice. Pollution Control in the South and North will be of interest to scholars and practitioners in environmental economics, pollution control, and policy studies. Condition : very good copy. Condition: good. The Hague : Fondad, 2006. Paperback. 181 pp.- Contributing authors: Jane D' Arista, Zden?k Dràbek, Barry Eichengreen, Fan Gang, Stephany Griffith-Jones, Jan Kregel, Yonghyup Oh, Yung Chul Park, Barbara Stallings, Jan Joost Teunissen, Wing Thye Woo Editors: Jan Joost Teunissen and Age Akkerman A book that analyse…s how the ballooning foreign debt problem of the United States and the problem of increasing global economic imbalances are related, how these problems should be addressed and by whom. Contributing authors provide deep insights and practical policy suggestions of what can be done to lessen the vulnerability of developing countries and contribute to a resolution of the US debt and global imbalances problems. According to some of the contributors, the fundamental problem lies in a global monetary system that maintains the US dollar as the key currency. This allows the US to run high deficits and it prolongs a situation in which capital flows "uphill" - from poor countries to the richest country of the world. They see a reform of the international monetary system that ends the hegemony of the dollar as the best solution. Other contributors observe that as long as both Asia and Europe continue to use positive net exports to support their domestic policy goals, they will continue to finance US deficits. The book devotes considerable attention to China's role in the global imbalance problem. It investigates whether there are good reasons for placing so much blame on China, and concludes that the focus on the bilateral balance between China and the United States is exaggerated and misleading. Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Paperback, xix + 223 pages, NOT ex-library. Book is clean and bright with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Minor handling wear only. Straight uncreased spine. -- Published at a pivotal moment following the 2005 G8 Gleneagles Summit and the launch of the…Commission for Africa, this volume provides a critical assessment of the continent's economic trajectory within the global financial architecture. Moving beyond the "big push" aid debates of the era, the contributors - representing a characteristically Southern perspective championed by FONDAD - examine the transition from the Washington Consensus to the Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP) framework. The analysis argues that previous structural adjustment programs largely failed by ignoring Africa's unique "starting conditions" and domestic institutional realities. A major pillar of the work is the investigation of capital flight, with contributors presenting the provocative argument that Africa is a "net creditor" to the rest of the world because private assets held abroad exceed the continent's external debt. The book also provides an early and essential analysis of the "Asian Drivers," exploring how the burgeoning roles of China and India began to reshape African trade patterns and offer alternatives to traditional Western-led development models. The text addresses the limitations of the HIPC Initiative and calls for more radical debt sustainability frameworks that prioritise human development over creditor interests. By examining regional integration, currency unions, and the impact of the WTO on commodity-dependent nations, the volume offers a sophisticated critique of the asymmetric global system. It remains a foundational resource for understanding the structural constraints, trade injustices, and the persistent "poverty trap" that continue to define African economic policy debates today.
