Add to basketFull-Leather. Condition: Good. First Edition. London, Rodwell and Martin, 1820. First edition. Small folio. Lithographed frontispiece signed 'Written on stone by J.Netherclift' and 100 finely drawn lithographed plates mostly signed by Augustino Aglio. No text pages (as issued). An uncommon architectural pattern book of ornamental designs inspired by Roman, Greek and classical styles. Many of the images are reminiscent of the ornamental designs found at Pompeii. The designs include individual ornamental elements, capitals for pillars, mouldings and friezes as well as lamp stands, urns, candlesticks and vases. This was apparently, one of the first pattern books to embrace the relatively new medium of stone lithography and consequently, the line-drawn plates have a crisp precision to the detail that they illustrate. The work was re-issued in four parts in 1823. Attractively bound in near-contemporary full calf boards with gilt and blind tooled decoration to the covers and marbled endpapers. Neatly rebacked with gold decoration and lettering to the spine. All edges gilt. Loss from worm damage to small areas of the leather covering near the front and rear hinges though this damage does not extend into the fabric of the boards or the book itself. Nor does it affect the integrity of the binding whose covers are still firmly attached. Corners a little rubbed. Moderate foxing and browning to the title page and minor foxing to the first plate. Otherwise, a clean copy of a splendid and uncommon work with the text block sound and the binding in good condition. Further photographs available on request.
