cloth. Hungary (illustrator). 8vo. cloth. lxiv, 896; 897-1872; 1873-3257 pages. Az Országos Széchényi Konyvtár 16. századi nyomtatványainak katalógusa : nem magyar nyelvu, kulfoldi kiadvanyok. First edition. Called "The Hungarian Bibliophile's Handbook," this volume is a bibliography of rare books, prints, and other book-related items sold at auctions in Hungary between 1969 and 1988. The bibliography is in the tradition of the 1939 volume of identical name and objectives for books that appeared on the market between 1888 and 1938. The detailed entries list auction lots alphabetically, with multi-volume lots having sub-numbers for individual items. The descriptions of the lots are transcribed from the original auction catalogues. Some 14,500 items, with a purported 25,000 to 30,000 bibliographic descriptions, make up the two catalogue volumes. Entries include specific information, such as the "put-up" price and price attained in standard form, as well as other information, such as the auction, its date, location, and official assessments of the lots in question (e.g., "cannot be taken abroad," "deserves individual protection"), in a symbolic code that is fully explained in the introduction. A variety of different indices (the whole of Volume Three, which is bound together with Volume Two) that organize the material by subject, form, name, intellectual contributors, artistic contributors, series geography, and portraits facilitate the location of pertinent lots within the first two volumes. The introduction and a list of frequently used abbreviations and terms appear in Hungarian, English, and German for the convenience of the user. Loosely inserted is a commemorative book label that indicates that this volume came from the reference library of H.P. Kraus purchased by Oak Knoll Books at the auction sale. From the reference library of Philadelphia Rare Books & Manuscripts with their bookplate included.
