Condition: Used. The father of Tomás Aragón loses his job for an unusual reason- his faith. That very same day Tomás and his friend Dan Rico, the minister's son, attend an auction. Almost before they know it, they have spent fifty-two cents for a glorious collection of useful junk. In the pile there are pipes for Dan to use in making a jungle gym for his mother's church kindergarten. There are some old extension cords so Tomás can fix up a real electric light in the playhouse he is building for his younger sister's corduroy elephant. And there are two metal boxes-locked. How do the boys get the boxes open? And what do they find inside? Something valuable, surely, or why would the author call her book Treasures for Tomás And something more valuable than the contents the boxes eventually revealed. Tomás and Dan go to work on the mystery. How the solution involves a Cuban refugee family and helps Mr Aragón solve his employment problem makes a satisfying story for primary boys. Girls will like it too, especially the part where Silvia, Tomás's ten-year-old sister, gives a push to the boys detective work.

Condition: Used. You won't find a place called Talasah, Oklahoma, unlike a real town where likable people live and interesting things happen. Among these people are sandy-haired Larry Morris, his friend Chesty Simms, who is half Osage and half Creek Indian, and Grandma Riley, who is one of the kindest and liveliest old ladies anyone could know. Grandma Riley is really Larry's great-grandmother, and she remembers almost everything that ever happened in Talasah from the time the town began. Grandma Riley has a fine collection of old arrowheads including one that is her special treasure because it once belonged to an Indian Chief. Larry and Chesty feel very proud when she lends the arrowheads to them so they can make a display to take to their class in school. The boys have fun planning how they will mount and show them. Then a dreadful thing happensâ"the most precious arrowhead disappears! They hunt and hunt, but it cannot be found. The mystery of the lost arrowhead leads to a fight between Larry and Chesty, and for a while their friendship is spoiled. A lot of things happen before the arrowhead finally turns up and the boys become friends again. Those who read the story will be delighted with the part Brownie, Larry's frisky cocker spaniel, plays in the mystery.

Flyleaf inscription reads "Love from Edith." There is also a 3x5 card in the book inscribed "Kara - The author worked with Gladys in N. Mexico and later with your Gran'pa in Ganado, Az, a school for Navajo Indian children. Thought you might be interested!" This card does not appear to be in the author's hand, but perhaps "Kara's" grandmother or mother who may have known the author and was, thus, able to get a signed first edition.
