Ainalovs thesis was published in 1900-1901 in the Bulletin of the Imperial Russian Archaeological Society, it presented a radical departure from the accepted theories…of the time and permanently altered the scholarly approach to Byzantine art. Ainalov, following the analytical methods developed by his teacher, N. P. Kondakov, concluded that the artistic expression of the Byzantine Empire throughout its 900 years was a heritage of the great Hellenistic markets of the Near East.
