Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Butcher Joe Nangan was one of those charismatic people who exercised a most profound impact on all who met him.Having spent his life acquiring the ritual knowledge and lore, not only of his own Nyikina and Walmajarri forbears but also that pertaining to the lands of his neighbours, Nangan be…lieved that he could, through his art; present his world to a wider audience. With pencil, paint and pocket knife Nangan deftly depicted the artefacts, legends and history of his country. The legends that Nangan relates and illustrates provide a traditional explanation on how his world came to be. Nangan also records the often-brutal history of the frontier experience and the clash of cultures as Europeans began to encroach on Aboriginal lands.Possibly one of the most prolific of Australia's Indigenous artists Nangan left a record unparalled of a world at the cusp - a world that would soon fade and vanish as time moved on Butcher Joe Nangan was one of those charismatic people who exercised a most profound impact on all who met him. French flaps. 1st Edition. Quarto, stiff pictorial wraps with French flaps, colour illus, b&w illus, unpag. (pp 86). Copiously illustrated with examples of Flash Jack's work. Fine condition. In the first half of the 20th century Flash Jack was a well-known and respected artist who primarily catered for the crews and passengers o…f steam ships that serviced the coastal towns of Western Australia and sailed north to Singapore. Working on paper, boab nuts and small pearl shells, Jack created images of Aboriginal life in the Kimberley. Sadly, by the 1970s his name had disappeared from the story of Kimberley indigenous art history. In The Forgotten Art of 'Flash Jack' Barrymore, Kim Akerman with Bruno Jordanoff examine Jack's life and art, bringing together nearly a hundred works of art which had, until recently, been forgotten and place this extraordinary man as a crusader for Aboriginal contemporary art in the Kimberley.
