Alan B. Beddoe (illustrator). First Edition. SHACKLES, Graphic Press, 1926, first Canadian edition in dust jacket. Dust jacket has issues: some spotting and a large chip at foot of spine, , missing piece across the top front of jacket that extends to the back. Oddly enough, not as bad as it sounds - as you can see in the pics. The Graphic edition is rare in any condition, and is unheard of in a dust jacket. There are no images of the dj in Google images (if that counts for anything). Shackles is an examination of first-wave feminism in Canada, focusing on the power and gender dynamics of the early 20th-century middle class. The novel follows the protagonist Naomi Lennox, a middle-class woman fighting for respect as a writer and for freedom within her church and marriage. The book was highly praised by some and condemned by others for its portrayal of sex in marriage. Some academic have described this book at having been published under the pseudonym 'Gilbert Knox.' It wasn't. She wrote numerous novels, but only two were published under that pen name, this ain't one of them. Again, rare in dust jacket. Also included is a ratty copy of the January 1917 issue of The Canadian Magazine, which includes Macbeth's short story 'The Mind of the Family.' Issue also includes stories by other great Canadian feminist writers. We welcome all reasonable offers on our books.
