"During the latter half of the second millennium B.C., a number of important material and technological advances (i.e., domestication of cereals, large scale irrigation, and master-craftsmen techniques in the working of stone, adobe, ceramics and gold) made their appearance in Peru. Soon after 1000 B.C. these new inventions and innovations produced a new unity in the culture complex of northern Peru. This unity was directly related and manifested in a socio-religious cult called Chavin, after the ceremonial center at Chavin de Huantar. The religious art of Chavin is characterized by feline-fanged deities and a host of other dynamic animal demi-deities: condor, snake, fox, puma, and jaguar. The influence of Chavin religion gave rise to the development of several distinctive regional cultures: Cupisnique, Salinar, Gallinazo (Viru), Recuay, Vicus, and Mochica.".
