Neil Edmonstone rose through the ranks to be appointed the Acting Governor-General of India, Secretary of the Secret, Foreign and Political Department and for more than 20 years the Chief Intelligence Officer of the Company. John Baillie was appointed the Political Agent, aged 30, for Bundelkhand, which he brought successfully under British control, before his appointment as British Resident at Lucknow in 1807. Both men had no less than 21 Anglo-Scottish and Scottish-Indian children, 9 of whom were all sent back to Inverness in Scotland to be educated and brought up by John's sister Margaret Baillie. This book tells us their stories as well as those of their parents.

Add to baskethardcover. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Covers and illustrations by Alan Carr Linford (illustrator). 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Illustrated boards, no jacket as issued. some minuscule edge wear to top and bottom of covers and spine, corners very slightly bruised, no published price, no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy. 60pp, illustrated. A fun, somewhat tongue in cheek collection of recipes by men. I particularly liked the Mediterranean winter soup, contributed by Jean-Jacques Bouilliant-Linet. The Distressed Gentlefolk's Aid Association was established by Elizabeth Anne Finn in 1897, a charity providing help and assistance to relieve the problems of old age, illness, social isolation and disability in 'the better sort of people'. In 2000 the charity changed its somewhat class bound and out dated name to 'Elizabeth Finn Care and is now called Turn2Us after a merger.
