Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First edition. A near dedication copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To Daddy -- with much love from its author -- Alan, November 3, 1972." With his name in Japanese characters and his chop stamp in red. Obviously an exceptional association in and of itself, but more so because his father, Laurance W. Watts, writes the foreword to the book. It begins: "A foreword by a father to his son's autobiography may not be unique but it must surely be something a rarity." What follows is a moving, quite charming reflection on his son's growth, inclinations, and legacy. This father concludes, "Finally, he has done more perhaps than other writer to open the eyes of the West to the spiritual significance of Eastern religions and philosophies and to show that the Truth is not the monopoly of any one school of religious or philosophic thought." It's well said. Alan Watts remains perhaps the foremost promoter of Zen, Hinduism, and Taoism in the West and was a central figure of the counter culture of the 60s. This book is his remembrance of his Christian upbringing in England and his explorations toward Eastern thought and religion. He died the year after this book's publication in 1973. Octavo in orange cloth. Very good with light soiling to lower board edges and trace foxing to top. In a very good dust jacket with sunning to spine that drifts onto the front panel and some loss to spine ends. Uncommon signed, and an exceptional, quite significant association copy. Signed.

First edition. Signed copy of Alan Watts' first book following the 32-page pamphletAn Outline of Zen Buddhismpublished in 1932.The Spirit of Zen,published when Watts was just 21 years old, was an early attempt to interpret and explain the origins of Zen Buddhism for a Western audience. This concise treatise remains one of the most clear-cut explanations of Zen and laid the intellectual groundwork for Watts' later role as the most important popularizer of Eastern philosophy in the English-speaking world. This copy is signed by Watts in his early style, and incredibly scarce thus; a cornerstone of Western Zen literature. 17x12cm, [5], 136pp plus [4]pp publisher's ads at rear. Beautifully signed by Watts on the title page below his printed name. Yellow cloth boards with black lettering and vignette illustration on front cover in illustrated jacket. Boards a touch foxed around edges and with scattered marginal foxing, mainly to first 1/3 or so of the page block. Former owner's gift inscription to ffep. Jacket with foxing and light chipping at spine ends. A very good example of a scarce book.

First edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For the Golds - with best wishes, Alan Watts"; this title is rare inscribed. Watts's "manual of initiation into the central mystery of existence" (jacket blurb) draws on the ancient Hindu philosophy of Vedanta to investigate ideas of the "self". Watts's thesis is that the prevalent idea of the "self" as a separate ego which acts upon a world of objects is false and accords "neither with Western science nor with the experimental philosophy-religions of the East" (p. ix). This misconception underlies our misuse of technology and our mistreatment of our environment and contributes to a sensation of alienation from the wider universe. "You have seen that the universe is at root a magical illusion and a fabulous game, and that there is no separate 'you' to get something out of it, as if life were a bank to be robbed. The only real 'you' is the one that comes and goes, manifests and withdraws itself eternally in and as every conscious being. For 'you' are the universe looking at itself from billions of points of view, points that come and go so that the vision is forever new" (pp. 117-8). Octavo. Original tan cloth, spine lettered in red, gilt, and orange, with stamped design in black, front board stamped in orange, top edge orange, fore edge uncut. With dust jacket. Four pressed leaves loosely inserted. Foot of spine bumped and rubbed; four closed tears to head of unclipped jacket, edges a little chipped and nicked, vertical crease to spine: a near-fine copy in very good jacket.

First hardback edition, first printing, presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper, "For Robert Macy, with all good wishes from its author - Alan Watts". This title is rare signed. Macy was a Southern Californian osteopath who partially resided in Big Sur, where he befriended several artists and writers, including Watts and Henry Miller. Watts was a prolific and popular public speaker and one of the first people to popularize Buddhist thought in the West. He advocated for the use of psychedelic drugs as a tool to expand one's consciousness. Square quarto. With black and white photographic illustrations throughout. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt and in black relief on gilt ground, front cover lettered in blind. With dust jacket. Macy's discreet address sticker on front pastedown, pink card bookmark from Books in Review, LA, loosely inserted. Lower edges of boards sunned, lower outer corners just bumped, endpapers slightly toned, a few tiny marks to first few leaves; unclipped jacket a little rubbed, edges creased with a few chips and closed tears: a near-fine copy in very good jacket.
