With its caustic admixture of the earnest and the satirical in its defiant championship of the poetic in opposition to the assaults of positivistic science, it is a significant precursor of surrealism; and, although it has affinities, unsurprisingly, with other near-contemporary radical Symbolist texts, it is very much one of a kind, and has lost none of its trenchancy with the passage of time." Co-fondateur du Mercure de France (dont il s'agit ici de la troisième publication sur souscription), Aurier y tint la chronique artistique jusqu'à son décès en octobre 1892. Ses critiques parurent aussi dans le Moderne illustré, qu'il fonda en 1889, et La Revue indépendante. Parmi celles reprises ici, deux sont capitales dans l'histoire de l'art : le tout premier article de fond consacré à Van Gogh, paru en pré-originale en 1890, et l'article sur Le Symbolisme en peinture : Paul Gauguin, paru en 1891. Les autres articles sont consacrés à l'impressionnisme (Monet et Renoir), au néo-impressionnisme (Pissarro), à Raffaëlli, de Groux, Carrière, Henner, Monticelli, ou Meissonier (qu'il éreinte). Le dessin de Van Gogh qui figure page 203 est la toute première reproduction d'une de ses oeuvres dans un livre. Un des 209 ex. sur papier teinté, seul tirage avec 10 sur Japon et 40 sur Hollande. Préface ornée d'un bandeau en linteau de Léon Bloy, qui sera repris en 1900 dans Je m'accuse. Hormis un manque de papier en pied du dos, bon état. NB.
