Octavo, 47pp. Front cover illustration by Rockwell Kent, depicting a man reading a book, inside a cabin. Also accompanied by the seldom found 17pp, supplement, which consists of paper wrappers stapled together. Both housed in the original custom, red cloth and leather slipcase, made by the Scroll Club Bindery [very few of these cases were made, and we estimate the number to be less than 10] which shows wear to the spine, and some drying of the leather, yet serves as a fine protector of the contents within. The text of both Nobel Laurates follows: 'PREFACE / by / Professor ALBERT EINSTEIN. This catalogue bears witness to an undertaking of practical aid on behalf of peoples in Europe who are being unjustly persecuted. It is an act of joint cooperation on the part of Christian and Jewish philanthropists, who serve and remain true to the cause of humanity. Such efforts mitigate grievous distress and, over and above all this, strengthen those social forces in their own land, which alone can lead to real and lasting security. In our time, it becomes particularly clear that humanity and readiness to serve mean more to society than all wisdom and technical progress. For the possession of power as a tool is less decisive than the directed idea in which it is used. May this endeavor be successful in its immediate, material result as well as in regard to the convictions that emanate from it. Albert Einstein FOREWORD / by / DR. THOMAS MANN For the auction, I send you a fairly long manuscript as a donation: my lecture on Richard Wagner and the Nibelungen Ring . perhaps this manuscript may gain in value through the fact that, aside from a periodical, it has never before appeared in print. It gives me pleasure to be able to send this contribution for this good and noble cause. THOMAS MANN. -- Simply outstanding! A rarely seen, important statement issued 'on behalf of peoples in Europe who are being unjustly persecuted' by these two great German Nobel Laureates. See our website for more info.
