Based on the "Asterix" comic book series by writer Goscinny and illustrator Uderzo, a series that began in 1959, serialized in Pilote magazine, and ran until Goscinny's death in 1977, afterwards written by Uderzo until 2009. The series has spawned thirteen films, four of them live-a…ction, games, and a theme park near Paris, as well as selling over 300 million copies of "Asterix" books worldwide. "Twelve Tasks" is the only Asterix film based on an original screenplay rather than material from the comic books, and was later adapted into a comic book and a series of illustrated children's book. Julius Caesar challenges the Gauls to a series of twelve tasks, inspired by the Twelve Labors of Hercules, but different since those are "outdated." Of course, Asterix and Obelix succeed at each humorous, satirical challenge, causing Caesar to retire to a house in the country with Cleopatra, and leaving the heroes in charge of the Roman Empire. Benziger hatte auf einer Reise ins Elsass eine Reihe deutscher und französischer Kalender gesehen. Deshalb kam er auf die Idee, Pater Gall Morel [od. Morell] zu fragen, ob er einen Kalender schreiben würde. Morel sagte zu und schrieb in der 'Vorrede des Kalendermachers', in der allerersten Ausgabe, er wolle mit dem 'Einsiedler Kalender' ein Gegengewicht zu jenen Kalendern schaffen, die keine religiösen Inhalte vermitteln und stattdessen [.] wirklich ehrbare Leute geistlichen und weltlichen Standes durch Zeichnung und boshafte Schilderung vor aller Welt an den Pranger stellen.? [Anm.: das könnte allenfalls auf den von Martin Disteli illustrierten Schweiz. Bilderkalender und den 'Distelikalender' gemünzt sein]. [.] Der 'Einsiedler Kalender' war in seiner Ausrichtung 'grundbrav, tiefreligiös, glaubensvoll und glaubensfreudig [.].' [Zit. aus Jg. 1940, p. 15]. Der 'Einsiedler Kalender' erfreute sich grosser Beliebtheit und erreichte schnell hohe Auflagenzahlen. [.] Pater Gall Morel amtete 33 Jahre lang als Kalendermacher. Nach seinem Tod (1872) übernahm Pater Albert Kuhn (1873-1920) die Redaktion. In den 80 Jahren, in denen Morel und Kuhn den Kalender gestalteten, prägten fast ausschliesslich sie und ihre Mitbrüder den Inhalt. So gesehen, war der 'Einsiedler Kalender' eine Stimme des Klosters. Der Kalender übte vor allem in seiner Anfangszeit einen nicht zu unterschätzenden Einfluss aus, war er doch oft die einzige Lektüre im Haus. Fribourg 2005, p. 50, Fussnote 210 als Zitat aus Einsiedler Kalender 1963). - Die Firma Benziger zeichnete sich aus durch Innovationsfreude und publizistische Vielseitigkeit, sowie, daraus hervorgehend, ein beachtliches technisches Know-how. Zudem hielt sie mit den verlegerischen Herausforderungen und den Erwartungen des breiten Publikums tatkräftig Schritt. Dies gilt nicht zuletzt auch für den Bereich der Bildproduktion und der Illustration von Publikationen. "Der Personal- und Maschinenbedarf für diese Menge und Qualität an Druckerzeugnissen war gewaltig: Für den Buchdruck arbeiteten Mitte des [19.] Jahrhunderts bereits 20 Pressen. 1845 wurde eine Buchdruckschnellpresse von Koenig und Bauer erworben, damals Inbegriff modernster Spitzentechnologie. Besonderes Gewicht hatte der Kunstdruck mit der Herstellung von Andachtsbildern. So wurde bereits 1835 eine Lithografie- und Kolorieranstalt eingeführt. Dann folgte 1844 die Stereotypie, 1847 die Pariser- und Gipsstereotypie. 1856 begann man mit dem Stahl- und Kupferdruck, 1858 mit der Galvanoplastik, 1863 folgte die Zinkografie. Eine drucktechnische Revolution brachte um 1860 die 1837 erfundene Chromolithografie, mit der es erstmals möglich wurde, in gros.
