Marius-Michel wsa award a Grand Prix and Chevalier of the Legion of Honor at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900. Widely considered Alfred de Musset's best play, Lorenzaccio is set in 16h century, where the idealistic Lorenzo known as Lorenzzaccio swears to kill Florence's tyrant and his own cousin, Alessandro de Medici. It was written soon after the July revolutions of 1830, at the start of the July Monarchy when King Louis Philippe I overthrew King CHarles X of France. The play contains many cynical moments on the lack of true republican sentiments in the face of violent overthrow. The play was inspired by George Sand's Une Conspiration en 1537, in turn inspired by Varchi's chronicles. Like much of the Romantic tragedy, including plays by Victor Hugo, it was influenced by William Shakespeare's Hamlet. Albert Maighan (illustrator).
