Covers are clean and intact overall but have darkening (most noticeable on spine), offsetting on back, light rubbing, and slight wear to extremities. A Good copy. The Quintessence of Socialism (German: Quintessenz des Socialismus) was an essay originally written in 1875 by Albert Schaffle (1831-1903), a German political economist, sociologist, and journalist. In his essay, Schaffle provides his definition of socialism and discusses his interpretations and analyses about what socialism entails and what it may lead to. Ultimately, this essay generally argues against socialism. For example, Schaffle argues that socialism and democracy are incompatible. However, toward the end of the essay, Schaffle states his essay was not written to make a final, pointed argument against socialism. In Bernard Bosanquet's Preface to the English Edition, Belgian economist Emil de Laveleye is quoted or paraphrased as saying that this work, to date as of 1889, is the only publication that "explains the scheme of collectivism and treats it in a scientific way." This First English-language Edition was translated from the Eight German Edition under the supervision of Bernard Bosanquet. Among the subtopics addressed in Schaffle's essay are the "profit as 'appropriation of surplus-value,'" "property as theft," "buying-out of the modern plutocrats," "determinations of demand," "freedom of demand," "organization of labour and capital into a system of collective production," "abolition of all loan-capital," "abolition of trade in 'commodities,'" "abolition of metallic money as the medium of exchange," "value-estimate of the Socialistic State compared with the present market-price," "the Socialistic determination of value in exchange," "freedom of labour in the Socialistic State," "income, and the use of income in the formation of property, and in consumption," "family life and marriage," "savings-banks and insurance systems," and "expenditure on charitable, humanitarian, religious, and other ideal purposes.".
