The resort is located on the shore of Lake Mohonk, which is half a mile long, in the 1,500-foot Shawangunk Range, just south of the Catskills. The main structure was built -- and expanded, year by year -- by Quaker twin brothers Albert and Alfred Smiley between 1869 and 1910.
