Welche Erwartungen an die Gegenwart und Zukunft vertrat er? Welche Rolle maà er sich darin selbst bei? Wie sah sein Verhältnis zu Johannes dem Täufer aus, warum lieà er sich von ihm taufen? Hatte sein Weg nach Jerusalem eine besondere Bedeutung? Was führte zu seiner Kreuzigung? Solche Fragen werden leider von den erhaltenen Quellen uneindeutig bis widersprüchlich beantwortet. Die Jesus-Forschung wendet daher schon lange Kriterien zur Feststellung des Authentischen an: Alter und Unabhängigkeit der Quellen, Tendenzkritik, Dissimilarität, die ipsissima vox Jesu, Kohärenz, breite Bezeugung, historische Plausibilität, usw. Erstaunlicherweise führt die Anwendung dieser Kriterien in der wissenschaftlichen Forschung aber zu Jesus-Bildern, die noch widersprüchlicher als die der Quellen selbst sind. Dieses Buch unterzieht die übliche Kriteriologie der Jesus-Forschung im ersten Teil einer scharfen Kritik. Ihre logischen Ungenauigkeiten und Fehler sowie Probleme der Anwendung werden dargestellt. Exegetische Beispiele untermauern die Revision und kritisieren dabei gängige Positionen der Jesus-Forschung, z.B. zu den Antithesen der Bergpredigt und zur Gottesherrschaft. Zugleich wird das neue Kriterium der Datenauswertung vorgestellt. Der zweite Teil analysiert zunächst die Quellen und reduziert den Wert der neu rekonstruierten Spruchquelle. Sodann führt die Anwendung einer restriktiven Kriteriologie zu einem relativ verlässlichen Jesus-Bild, das mit Teilen der Jesus-Forschung übereinstimmt: Jesus sah sich als letzten Heilspropheten Gottes vor dem Weltende, der dem gesamten Gottesvolk eine letzte Chance zum Heil verkündigte. Als palästinischem Juden galt ihm die Thora als bleibende Offenbarung des Rechtswillens Gottes. Im Unterschied zur üblichen Jesus-Forschung wird aber bestritten, dass Jesus in seinem Wirken das Gottesreich schon zeichen- oder keimhaft anbrechen sah. Wahrscheinlicher ist eine strikt terminierte Enderwartung: der Anbruch des Gottesreiches am 15. Nisan 28 n. Chr. in Jerusalem. Eine Gerichtserwartung als Kehrseite der Heilsbotschaft oder im Falle der Ablehnung fehlte vermutlich.
