Hardcover no dust jacket. Pictorial black cloth with decorative gilt designs to both boards and gilt titles to spine in good condition with small split to bottom of front side of spine with a few marks and rubbing to tips of boards. Inside all pages with full edge gilt in very good clean condition although the threads that hold the pages are a little slack with some pages coming loose just at the bottom of the pages. Overall a nice copy of this 19th century story, based on a French children's song , about Mother Michel and her cat, Mounmouth, who actually belongs to the Countess de la Grenouillère who has entrusted Mother Michel to look after him.

Edition originale de cet album satirique assez surréaliste, contre le roi Louis-Philippe, qui commence par une très longue préface sous la forme d'une sorte de bande dessinée. L'album sera remis en vente, fin 1848 ou en 1849, avec titre et faux-titre renouvelés sous le titre Louis-Philippe, ex-roi des marionnettes. C'est un ouvrage que l'on peut classer parmi les surréalistes avant l'heure, au même titre que Grandville. Notre exemplaire a conservé sa première couverture. Cet exemplaire est suivi d'un texte d'Amédée Rolland, La Légende de Cadet Rousselle, tiré d'une revue (paginé 92 à 101). Bradel demi-percaline postérieure (ca.1900), pièce de titre, première couverture conservée, tête rouge, rousseurs éparses. Bon exemplaire.

Der Moment des Veröffentlichung fiel mit der Februarrevolution, der Abdankung des Königs und dessen Flucht in das Exil nach London zusammen, so dass dem originellen Werk kein Erfolg beschieden war. Die im Titel verwendete Formulierung "Ex-Roi des Marionettes" darf visionär genannt werden, war die Entwicklung bei Drucklegung keineswegs vorhersehbar.- Lorentz (1813-1891) war Maler und Lithograph und schuf mit diesem Werk sehr originelles, heute noch modern anmutendes Künstlerbuch.- Unbeschnittenes, wohlerhaltenes Exemplar.- Brivois 266. Edition originale, exemplaire de l'auteur, largement truffé, et portant cet envoi à lui-même : « A moi. / A Lorentz ». Notre exemplaire est truffé de : Une longue note autographe signée de Lorentz, en garde, datée du 17 mai 1872, signalant notamment que « le libraire, éditeur en bibliophilie, distingué, passionné, respectueux, laborieux, honnête homme, Laporte » lui a dit la veille vouloir faire une seconde édition de cet ouvrage. Il s'y vante aussi avoir pressenti les évènements de 1848 et mention que Dumas fils lui a dit « Vous savez, je n'ai pas oublié votre pièce ! ». Cette note est signée d'une sorte de monogramme « AlLz » pour Alcide Lorentz. Trois longues notes autographes, datées du 11 décembre 1868, aux pages 120, 142 et 152. Corrections autographes aux pages 55, 64, 107, 109, 113, 138, 145, 146, 160, 163 et 177. Un dessin original au crayon représentant, selon une note, l'auteur assis sur un trône. Une plaquette inconnue de Lorentz, La Garde Mobile (poème, 12p in-8), datée du 2 mars 1868, avec 4 corrections et un envoi sur la page servant de titre : « A Gil Perez AlLz ». Nous n'avons trouvé aucune référence indiquant l'existence de ce texte. Une L.A.S., avec enveloppe, d'Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891) au marquis de Chennevières (1820-1889) recommandant Alcide Lorentz : « Monsieur Lorentz a toujours vaillamment lutté contre la mauvaise fortune quand souvent son talent & ses oeuvres en méritaient une bonne ». Lorentz a dû présenter cette lettre à Chennvières et l'aura conservée. Cette lettre est écrite entre 1873 et 1878 car elle mentionne sur l'enveloppe la qualité de Chennevières, directeur [de l'administration] des Beaux-Arts. Citons le début du poème de la plaquette inconnue, qui est évidemment une satire de la garde mobile : Vive la Garde Mobile ! Bien qu'on en grogne partout ; Bien qu'elle échauffe la bile Même des gobeurs de tout. J'en suis gai, j'en suis content, Tant et tant, et tant et tant ; J'en ris là, vraiment si fort, Que j'en ferais rire un mort ! [?] Tous les hommes, militaires, Et tous les bébés, soldats ; Même les vers solitaires Et les faiseurs d'attentats, Ainsi, naturellement, C'est-à-dire, forcément, Les hussards et les lanciers Remplaceront les huissiers.
