This is an antique copy of "Peter Schlemihl" by Aldebert von Chamisso (translated from the German by Sir John Bowring). 1874 3rd edition (stated); A. Denham & Co.; New York. This edition features full-page illustrations by GEORGE CRUIKSHANK. In the story, Schlemihl sells his shadow to the Devil for a bottomless wallet, only to find that a man without a shadow is shunned by human societies. Condition: Clean covers. Bright gilt lettering on the front cover and spine. The top and bottom edges of the spine are worn. There is a 2.5" cloth tear at the bottom-right edge of the spine where it meets the front cover. Tight binding. The front end paper, frontispiece and title page are attached, but have partially pulled from the spine. The pages are mostly clean with a small, light stain at the outer margin of pages 52-65. There is an old bookplate and bookshop label affixed to the front pastedown. A name/date (1875) is written in pen at the top-right corner of the title page. Overall the book is in Good- condition.
