First edition of A Semblance of Steerage, a poem by the Hebridean poet and sailor Ian Stephen, the first issue of the Under the Moon Series of poet-and-artist collaborations. Octavo, original printed wrappers in the concertina-folded format of the series, illustrated with a drawing by Will Maclean. One of 300 copies, published by Morning Star Publications in Edinburgh in March 1994. This copy is accompanied by an autograph postcard signed by the series editor Alec Finlay to the artist Elizabeth Ogilvie, dated 16 May 1994. It states that Finlay enclosed the first two issues of the Under the Moon Series and invited Ogilvie to make a project for it, writing that he admires her work and would be pleased to discuss the possibilities. In near fine condition with sunning to the outer card folder. A charming example of contemporary Scottish poet-and-artist collaboration with a fine association. Ian Stephen is a poet, sailor, and storyteller from the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, whose work is steeped in the sea, the boats, and the oral traditions of the Scottish islands. A Semblance of Steerage takes as its subject the rudders and tillers of small boats, each short poem a meditation on a particular piece of hand-worked timber. The drawing is by Will Maclean (born 1941), one of Scotland?s most distinguished artists, celebrated for his constructions and works evoking the maritime and Highland heritage of the north. The Under the Moon Series was published by Morning Star Publications, the imprint of the poet and artist Alec Finlay, son of the great concrete poet Ian Hamilton Finlay, who devoted the press to collaborations between writers and visual artists.
