Pelanda e Cainer, insieme col direttore Umberto Meneghetti (coautore di diversi degli scritti qui contenuti), lavorarono per anni nel manicomio veronese di San Giacomo, in un ambiente fortemente influenzato da Cesare Lombroso (anche lui veronese). In questo volume sono presenti informazioni di carattere generale nelle prime 65 pagine e poi, nelle restanti 290 pagine circa, numerosissimi singoli casi clinici di ospiti del manicomio.
