Lo sforzo pastorale si concentra sulla figura del sacerdote che riveste il ruolo di pastore d'anime; il testo prende avvio dal comando paolino ammonisci, rimprovera, esorta (2Tm 4,2), ma in questa sede il pastore intende soprattutto sollecitare a ricordare i propri peccati, finalizzato al pentimento (μετάνοια) e alla confessione (ἐξαγόρευσις). Il pentimento è di tipo personale, in cui il fedele chiede a Dio di perdonarlo, perciò si instaura un rapporto diretto con lui al fine di reintegrarlo (ἀνακτάομαι) nella comunione universale. Boccadoro compie una fine analisi psicologica dell'insinuarsi del peccato, offendo altresì dei criteri di discernimento riguardanti le parole, i pensieri e le azioni, indugiando sull'utilità di questo ricordo che «consola la mente, induce ad umiliarsi e attira l'affetto di Dio».
