This book reports on the first full year of activities of the Housing Authority of the City and County of San Francisco, which was created in 1938 to address the city's substandard housing problem. The report discusses the authority's efforts to eliminate unsafe and unsanitary dwellings, the results of the Real Property Survey, and the development of plans for new housing projects. The book also includes a discussion of the authority's work with other government agencies and private organizations, as well as a review of the legal and financial arrangements that have been made to support its activities. The report provides a valuable overview of the early history of public housing in San Francisco and the challenges that the city faced in addressing the issue of substandard housing. It also offers insights into the broader context of federal, state, and local cooperation in the development of housing policy during the Great Depression. Through the telling of the county's history, the author also offers a glimpse into the formative years of the Midwest and the American frontier. The text begins by describing the land before settlers arrived, its transformation after Native American tribes were displaced, and the subsequent arrival of predominately Kentucky settlers who brought their customs, language, and agricultural practices to the area. Additional chapters delve into the lives of the county's early inhabitants as they built their homes, established towns, and created a functioning society in a new and untamed land. In addition to the challenges of the frontier and the arduous work of establishing a new community, the book explores the social and cultural events that helped shape community life: religious practices, education, social gatherings, and political rallies. This book is a unique and valuable resource for anyone interested in local or regional history or the impact of westward expansion on American life.
