Hardback, 1901, first edition, contains facsimile hand-written letter of Newman to Whyte, published by Oliphant Anderson & Ferrier, Edinburgh and London, 254 pages plus 2-page publisher catalogue at rear. Octavo/8vo, measures around 7 5/8" by 5 3/8" by 1". No dust jacket. Very dark blue cloth binding, gilt lettering and emblem lettering to front board and gilt lettering to spine. Some marking and scuffing to binding with discoloured patch on front board. Signs of wear, rubbing at edges and on hinges. A little slackness to binding, some strain in centre of textblock but book otherwise contents firm. Upper page edges gilt, fore-edges cut and trimmed with some rough edges, also browned, scuffed and a bit marked. Some marking to endpapers, previous owner name to half-title page.
