Este libro aborda el reestudio lingüístico y los problemas de reconstrucción crítica del "Poema de Fernán González" (obra del Mester de clerecía, siglo XIII) incidiendo en la idea capital de que él único manuscrito conservado (del siglo XV) recogió una versión del poema previamente memorizada para su recitación…, hecho que explica el enorme grado de deturpación textual que se aprecia en la copia y las características concretas de algunos tipos de deformación de sus versos. Se revisan las ediciones del texto, las fuentes conocidas y las prosificaciones medievales. Se observan las características del manuscrito y se aborda la labor de los copistas. Se estudian diversos problemas relacionados con la transmisión textual y adulteraciones de versos y series de versos. Se analizan problemas gramaticales concretos y se proponen relecturas críticas de diferentes estrofas o conjuntos estróficos. Se recapitula sobre la transmisión textual y se propone un esbozo de estema del Poema de Fernán González. El libro concluye con una revisión de los principales problemas de la edición crítica de textos medievales y el papel que debe corresponder al lingüista histórico en la propia labor de reconstrucción y estudio crítico.

El estudio del contenido expresado por la forma verbal cantaba, en particular en confrontación con el expresado por canté, ha constituido tema recurrente en la investigación gramatical sobre el sistema verbal español y especial punto de desencuentro entre investigadores. En el panorama lingüístico actual… se han señalado dos tendencias predominantes en relación con esta cuestión: (a) una tendencia "temporalista", con su antecedente en los análisis en su día efectuados por Andrés Bello y su idea de un "co-pretérito" diferenciado de un "pretérito", y (b) una tendencia "aspectualista" que basa las diferencias gramaticales entre los dos señalados elementos verbales en la noción de aspecto verbal, hablando mayoritariamente de "imperfectividad" para caracterizar el valor propio de la forma que la tradición gramatical ha llamado "pretérito imperfecto".Por otro lado, cantaba, como otras formas (no todas) de la conjugación española, llama la atención por admitir empleos caracterizables en términos de "modales", cuya observación debe efectuarse en relación con el de la estructuración modal del verbo español.El presente libro revisa la pluralidad de realizaciones concretas de contenido gramatical expresables en castellano mediante la forma verbal cantaba, procediendo a su sistematización desde la confrontación con las expresables mediante otras formas, con especial atención a canté, y procediendo paralelamente a la revisión crítica de las diferentes visiones que han sido (y especialmente de las que siguen siendo) defendidas sobre los contenidos gramaticales que el tradicional "pretérito imperfecto de indicativo" transmite en el seno de un sistema verbal cuya estructuración modotemporal es de nuevo analizada desde el respeto al principio de la funcionalidad y con las precauciones metodológicas imprescindibles para que la aplicación de dicho principio conduzca a resultados científicamente válidos.
